 WSDC 2009 Press Release Minimize

(Hamilton) -- The Bermuda national debate team has returned home after recording four wins at the 21st annual World Schools Debate Championships which took place February 9-19 in Athens, Greece.

The five Bermuda debaters --- Jacari Brimmer-Landy, Ellisse Johnston, Michelle Kelly, Nikki-Lynn Marshall and Nicholas Rinehimer – as well as their accompanying coach, Gladstone Thompson, and adjudicator, Susan Panchaud attended the competition thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Montpelier Re Foundation.

More than 350 students, coaches and adjudicators from 39 countries took part in the English language competition which used a three person, parliamentary-style debate format.

Despite such stiff competition the Bermuda team was very successful with a total of four wins out of eight rounds of debate ending up 22nd  in the final ranking, ahead of strong teams such as USA and Israel. In terms of individual results, Michelle Kelly tied for 35th overall which is a great result for Bermuda. Topics fielded by the Bermuda team included whether cultural treasures should be returned to  their  areas  of  origin, the expanded use of nuclear energy, whether  terrorism  is ever justified, the ban of smoking in public places, whether  public  services are best run by private companies, whether or not to eat meat and other interesting topics.

Jennifer Haworth, president of the Bermuda Debate Society and former Worlds debater, said: “We are extremely grateful to the Montpelier Re Foundation for its generous donation to our organization. The debaters have returned to Bermuda not only better debaters, but they have been enriched by the wonderful experience of traveling to another country and meeting others from around the world. Congratulations to the debaters on their success. Your hard work paid off!”

Wayne Jackson, chairman of the Montpelier Re Foundation said, “The Montpelier Re Foundation was delighted to send the debate team to the World’s and we congratulate these young people on their success. The key elements of debate -- logical reasoning, powers of persuasion and public speaking -- are all important life skills and the Bermuda Debate Society is doing a good job at helping young people excel in this area.

The Bermuda Debate team prepared for the event during 2008 under the guidance of local National Debate Society Coaches, Christianna Hiles and Gladstone Thompson along with other students who meet on a weekly basis. Once  the  final  team  was  selected  in  December  practice sessions were increased  to  several  times  a  week to help the students prepare for Greece.

Adjudicator Susan Panchaud said that the World’s also provided a fantastic opportunity for the students to experience another culture.

She said, “Since the debates were held daily in several host schools in and around Athens, students were able to not only interact with participants from around the world but also with students in the various schools that hosted the debates each day. When they were not debating, the students were given the opportunity to visit the Acropolis and other sites around the city and were also able to sample some authentic Greek cuisine.”

New Zealand was the victor of the 2009 Worlds with a 6 to 1 win over England. The winning debate took place on the motion, “This House believes that governments should grant amnesties to all illegal immigrants”.

The next World’s tournament is scheduled to take place in Qatar in 2010 and will mark the first time the tournament will be held in the Middle East.

Students interested in debate should contact the Bermuda Debate Society at  bermuda.debate.society@gmail.com for further details.

WSDC 2009 Debate Team Bios Minimize
A fantastic team of young debaters has been put together to represent Bermuda at the 2009 instantiation of the World Schools' Debating Championships in Athens, Greece. Below are their bios (listed from left to right in the picture above):

Ellisse Johnston
Ellisse is 17 years old and is going to her first Worlds Debate Championship, after having competed successfully in her first National Tournament in November 2008. She still chuckles when she thinks of it. However her interests are varied and numerous, consisting of Student Council, the Saltus Shaker, Peer Tutoring, being Head Girl and having a good teenage time. This will be another exciting, enriching event to add to her life experiences.

Nicholas Rinehimer
Nicholas became involved in debate 6 years ago, during his first year of senior school. Since his first debate in the Bermuda Nationals he’s been a consistent member of the debate club at Saltus Grammar School. He has traveled to both Canada and England with his debate coach Miss Hiles to take part in the IISPSC as well as competing nationally each November. Nicholas is in his senior year of high school and plans to attend college in either Boston or New York to study chemical engineering and business. At his school he chairs the Student Council and runs the student newspaper. Outside of school he writes and directs movies and is constantly involved in the film scene on the Island. Whether he’s throwing his own premiere or working with the Bermuda International Film Festival, he’s always got something to do!

Nikki-Lynn Marshall
Nikki Marshall has had an interest in debate since she was eight years old and competed in her first competition. Ever since she has seen debating as an opportunity to learn new things and challenge herself. Her other interests include reading, playing the piano, and participating in public speaking competitions. In 2008 she also won the Youth Tourism Competition which allowed her to improve on her public speaking and has definitely helped with writing and structuring her debates! Debating is just something that she very much enjoys and she doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

Michelle Kelly
Michelle Kelly was born on a beautiful, hot summer's day 17 years ago. Although she has always been a talker and argued quite a bit, it wasn't until six years ago that she found her calling as a debater and she hasn’t stopped since! She has represented her school at the Bermuda National Competition for six years and won best speaker twice. She has represented Bermuda three times at the World Schools Debating Championship and hopes that Athens will be a wonderful experience.

Jacari Brimmer-Landy
Jacari first became involved in debate when at 11 he entered into the Global Peace and Tolerance debate in Bermuda, a debate organized by the United Nations. Ever since then he has been debating for both his school and his country. This will be his second trip to WSDC having competed in Washington DC in 2008. He feels most comfortable as a third speaker as he enjoys listening to his opponents arguments before totally tearing them apart.

Gladstone Thompson - Team Coach
Gladstone is a natural debater and educator and spends his days as a Head Master of a Primary School. He firmly believes that watching a great debate at the “Worlds” is simply the best form of entertainment one can find in the world. He is entering his second decade of debate involvement and trains debaters from the tender age of eight and beyond and has mentored some until they have reached Worlds standard. He looks forward to a great competition in Athens.

Susan Panchaud – Team Manager/Adjudicator
Susan has been involved in helping to organize debating competitions in Bermuda since 1991, although the last Worlds she attended were in London in 1992. As a founding member of the Bermuda Debate Society she has remained involved locally either as an adjudicator or behind the scenes on and off over the years. She is a great believer in community involvement and the “Pass it Forward” way of life and is thrilled to see the young debaters from the early years now running the Bermuda Debate Society. This will be her first experience as an accompanying adjudicator at a Worlds competition.
