Early in 2007, the Bermuda Debate Society hosted its first Bermuda Schools Debate Competition. The competition, which took place over the course of two weeks, culminated in a final debate at City Hall on Monday, 5 March.
Six school debate teams representing Berkeley Insitute, Bermuda High School, Bermuda Institute, Mount Saint Agnes Academy, Saltus Grammar School and Warwick Academy participated in the competition. With five students on each team, only three debaters competed in each round, allowing teams to rotate speakers and give more students the chance to participate.
The first two rounds were held at the Berkeley Institute on Thursday, 22 February and the third and fourth rounds were held at Saltus Grammar School on Friday, 23 February. In these preliminary rounds, students debated whether "This House Would Institute Mandatory Drug Testing for Legislators" in addition to the impromptu motions that "This House Would Censor the Internet" and "This House Believes that Junk Food Should Be Banned in Schools."
After each winning three of four preliminary rounds, BHS and Saltus progressed to the final round, debating the motion "This House Would Hold Parents Responsible for the Crimes of Their Children." While both teams were incredibly persuasive, three of five judges ruled in favor of BHS, who opposed the motion. The final debate was scheduled to air on VSB on March 26th at 7:30 p.m.
The winning BHS team consisted of Aliyyah Ahad, Annefa Burke, Catherine Campbell, Katryn Smith and Christie O’Doherty who awarded with blue ribbons and a plaque to commemorate their achievement. Rebecca Dickson, Jacari Brimmer-Landy, Tsilala Graham-Haynes, Adam Kiki-Charles, and Nicholas Rinehimer of the Saltus Grammar School team were awarded red ribbons and a plaque as the runner-up.
The Bermuda Debate Society is extremely grateful to everyone who participated in this competition; it would have not been possible without the help of students, coaches, judges, sponsors, and the audience members who came to support the students. It is hoped that this event provided the students with an opportunity to develop their debating skills, to think logically and articulate their ideas, and encouraged other students to become involved.
