History of Bermuda Debate Society The Bermuda Debate Society was created over 20 years ago in conjunction with the Bermuda Junior Service League out of their annual debate tournaments. Since then, BDS has been the umbrella organization for debating in Bermuda dedicating its efforts to developing debating in Bermuda schools.
Mission Statement The Bermuda Debate Society is a not-for-profit that promotes debate for Bermuda’s students, coordinates debating activities, trains judges and coaches, and has responsibility for the Bermuda National Debating Team.
The Bermuda Debate Society believes that the skill of debating is advantageous for all students and enhances their potential role as active citizens.
Bermuda’s top student debaters can excel at an international level, provided they have skilled coaching and ample opportunity to debate, both locally and overseas
Goals The goals of the Bermuda Debate Society are:
- Debate being recognized island-wide as a valuable activity in which students should be engaged;
- All students having the opportunity within their schools and through intra-school activities to learn to debate; and
- Bermuda building a strong National Debate Team that will become increasingly competitive in international competitions.
